"The mission of the Seattle Japanese Language School is to give instruction in the Japanese Language augmented by the introduction of culture and history of Japan and to enhance the learning process."
The Seattle Japanese Language School (SJLS) and the Nikkei Heritage Association of Washington/Japanese Cultural Community Center of Washington (NHAW/JCCCW) have teamed up and are now working together to bring culturally relevant, educational and fun programs to Seattlites of all ages.
SJLS has a very proud history. It is the oldest operating Japanese language school in the continental United States. It began as the Kokugo Gakko in 1902 and was a pillar of the Japanese community in Seattle. Like NHAW/JCCCW, the school has sought to preserve the heritage of Japanese immigrants and to advance the Japanese American culture and community here in Seattle.
