Code of Conduct

SJLS strives to promote the Japanese language and culture in an environment of mutual respect for both the student and teacher.  In an effort to enhance opportunities for leaning, the following guidelines have been established.

Each student will:

  • Respect the feelings of one another; this means he/she will not tease, call other students names, or interact in any hurtful manner. Others shall be treated as individuals, and derogatory statements regarding gender, race, ethnic background or physical characteristics will not be tolerated.
  • Respond respectfully to the teacher; this includes speaking in class only when called upon, answering questions in an appropriate way, and being helpful when possible.
  • Respect the classroom environment; actions to promote this include speaking in quiet tones, not disturbing other students, refraining from loud and disruptive behavior, leaving radios/ipods/electronic games at home, walking quietly in the building, and abstaining from eating or chewing gum in classroom (except during celebrations when planned or when permitted by the teacher).
  • Respect school property; this includes picking up paper/trash when dropped or noticed, refraining from writing on any inappropriate surfaces, and remaining on the school grounds during school hours.
  • Refraction of these guidelines may result in disciplinary actions. Teachers, office personnel, and parent volunteers have the authority and responsibility to enforce rules.  The following conduct is considered most serious and subject to discipline in class and recess:
a) Excessive noise and activity
b) Harassment of anyone
c) Fighting or abusive body contact
d) Using vulgar or profane language or obscene gestures
e) Disrespect and verbal or physical abuse of anyone
f) Failing to obey authorized persons
g) Stealing, vandalism, spitting, writing on the walls and in bathrooms;
h) Other actions which create disturbances or are detrimental to the
    safety of others
i) Use or possession of illegal drugs and/or dangerous weapons are subject to
    a referral to local police

The consequences of undesirable behavior are as follows:

  • First Infraction: Verbal warning to the student
  • Second Infraction: Parents will be contacted with a report of the activity
  • Third Infraction: Suspension or possible expulsion from SJLS
By following these guidelines, the safety and respect of all students and teachers are assured and a positive attitude toward learning is developed and appreciated by all.

Scholarship application is available on January 31. Deadline for submitting is February 15. You must attend SJLS for at least one year to be eligible to apply. For more detail, please contact school office, 206-323-0250 or email us at JLS@JCCCW.ORG

Drop-Off and Pick-Up Policy

SJLS strives to provide a safe and secure atmosphere for our students to learn the Japanese language and culture. To achieve this goal, we ask that parents help us by doing the following:

1. All parents are expected to pick up their child at 11:30 a.m. each school day.

2. Drop off and pick up:
a) First grade students are to be escorted to and picked up from class.
b) We recommend that all other students be escorted into and picked up from
     inside the building.
c) A note to the teacher at the beginning of class is required if you are picking
up your child or children early.
d) Parents or other authorized adults should pick up no later than 11:35a.m.
Instructing the child or children to wait on the sidewalk or street nearby after
that time is unacceptable. All children will be brought to the office after 11:35
a.m. to wait for an adult to pick them up.

To: Parents and Students

We have experienced children being picked up very late after class. This is a burden on the office staff and is a cause for concern for your child’s safety.

The school cannot provide monitors after school, and the school cannot be locked up while children remain on the premises. Please have consideration for your children and the school staff by picking up your children by 11:30 a.m.
