Omoide V Book Release Party
by Atsushi (Ats) Kiuchi
About 100 crowded into the meeting rooms of the Japanese Language School on October 17, 2009 for the introduction of Omoide V, the latest collection of the unique Japanese American experience in the Pacific Northwest.
The ongoing educational program of the Nikkei Heritage Association (NHAW) continues with the publication of the book. "This time we have 29 writers, contributing 40 first person stories. It is almost double of our previous Omoide IV book,", explained Project Leader Dee Goto.
As in the past, the book contains the childhood memories of the Nikkei before, during and after World War II. The stories evolve around their issei and nissei parents, the discrimination, loss of civil liberties during World War II, including the forced removal from their west coast homes, the incarceration and resettlement.
Omoide V also forms the core for school presentations, teachers' workshops and general public gatherings. To date, the Omoide Team has appeared before over 6,000 students and 250 teachers.
The occasion also served as an "autograph party" with several contributors reading their stories. They also signed copies of their stories. The refreshments were provided by Goodie Girls Catering. The co-owner is Penny Kumagai Atcheson, a member of the Omoide Team.
A special feature was the presentation by Tsugo "Ike" Ikeda on his book Ike's Principles. His recent publication covers some of the Japanese cultural traits that will help better our lives. Aki Sogabe, well-known Northwest artist, and illustrator Sam Goto were also present to sign autographs. Ms Sogabe and Goto have contributed their unique artwork to both Omoide books.
Both Omoide IV and Omoide V are available at $15 each by contacting NHAW at (206) 568-7114 or by e-mail at Omoide@jcccw.org. Information on the educational program for teachers is on the newly, updated web page at www.jcccw.org/omoide.
