Project: Community! 2010

Hello friends,

The Japanese American Citizens League Pacific Northwest chapter, in partnership with the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Washington (JCCCW) proudly announces Project: Community!, a unique new program geared toward high school students. Project: Community! focuses on empowerment of the self, creating awareness of the issues affecting the Japanese American community and increasing youth leadership within both the Nikkei community and beyond.

Although the program is focused on the historic and contemporary Nikkei community, our mission is to provide youth from all cultural and ethnic backgrounds a place to develop their leadership skills. The program is organized around a variety of hands on learning sessions and dynamic projects that are designed to enrich students through knowledge of self, identity, a sense of place and community.

Through Project: Community! a select group of high school students from around the Puget Sound area will be visiting the places, learning about Nikkei history/heritage and meeting members of the Northwest Japanese American community in order to help build a cohesive new future for the Nikkei community. In addition, the program will provide a safe and supportive place for youth to develop their own identity and will seek to empower students with the confidence and determination to improve not only the community but themselves as well.

Project: Community! is an exciting opportunity for students not only to learn about and get involved with the Japanese American community but to also experience a number of unique field trips and special activities including a historical walking tour of Nihonmachi led by Uncle Bob Santos; a visit to Yellow Terror - The collections and paintings of Roger Shimomura at the Wing Luke Asian Museum with a Q&A session with the artist, and Seattle native son, Roger Shimomura; discussions with Kip Tokuda and Lori Matsukawa, guest speakers and much more!

Registration closes on Feb 17, 2010. Attached is a program agenda for our first session. Sessions will occur on one Wednesday evening a month and one Saturday day per month. If you know someone who would be interested in joining this exciting new community youth program, or if you have any questions, please email the JCCCW at projectcommunity@jcccw.org
