The 7th Regional Taiko Gathering (RTG) of groups from Alberta, British Columbia, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington will be held from Friday, August 13 to Sunday, August 15, 2010 on the University of Washington campus in Seattle, WA.
The nine Seattle taiko groups are pleased to be hosting RTG 2010. It is our privilege and pleasure to provide an opportunity to explore both the roots and the future of taiko, from its Japanese cultural heritage, through its role in the history of U.S. and Canadian Japanese communities, to the expanding cultural richness found amongst the groups in our region. At the time of the first RTG in 1998, we counted 15 groups in our region; this year, we believe there are more than 25 groups, and we hope to meet all of you at RTG 2010!
The purpose of the Gathering will be to:
•
Enjoy taiko, maintain ties, and network with other taiko groups
•
Provide a mechanism for individuals to connect with Japanese American and Japanese Canadian culture and heritage as they have grown from their roots in Japan
•
Stimulate a broadened vision of taiko, inspire original artistic expression, and explore other cultural traditions
•
Share and exchange ideas, styles, and visions with groups from the surrounding region
•
Practice and learn new skills and techniques to enhance the pleasure of performing taiko
Attached are a registration form, tentative schedule, liability waiver, and lodging information. Workshop descriptions will follow later. We hope you will be able to participate in this unique opportunity to expand your knowledge, gain new skills, meet new friends, and have lots of fun in Seattle! Deadline for early registration is June 1, 2010. After June 1st, the registration fee will increase to $125.
