Class Text Book Description
Beginning 1 Yasashii Nihongo Introductory Students are expected to learn the following: simple greeting expressions, self introduction, vocabulary words related to family, colors, animals, classroom objects, foods, drinks and parts of the body. The numbers from 1 to 100 and counters (age, school grades and price) are also introduced. Short sentences will be practiced. ( suki/kirai desu, kore wa __desu, arimasu, tabemasu, kudasai, etc.) Writing: All the hiragana symbols will be introduced and students will be practicing reading and writing them. Will be learning these through songs, stories and cultural events.
Beginning 2 Yasashii Nihongo Introductory Elementary l More counters ( people, objects and animals), negative forms of verbs (~masen form ) and simple adjectives (ookii, chiisai, etc.) will be introduced. Short sentences using”~ga hoshii desu” will be practiced. Students will write their names in Katakana.
Beginning 3 Yasashii Nihongo Elementary Verb conjugation( te form, mashita, masen deshita, mashoo) and their usage(tabete kudasai, tabete imasu, etc.) will be introduced. Students are also expected to learn the following: days of the week, days of the month, months, time, direction words,and negative forms of simple adjectives, etc. More verbs (hanasu, hashiru, arau, etc) will be practiced. All katakana symbols and a few Kanji (ue, shita, naka,ookii, etc) will be introduced in this level.
Intermediate 1 Yasashii Nihongo Intermediate Students are expected to learn the following: modifiers (kono, sono,ano, dono), personal pronouns possessive case (watashi no, dare no, etc.), particles (ga, wa, ni, de, mo, etc), counters(mai, jikan, etc), te form usage, adjective and na adjective conjugation. A few sentence patterns and approximately 30 Kanji will be introduced
Intermediate 2 Genki 1 hort forms (verb, I/na adjective) and comparative and superlative expressions will be introduced. Students will practice the following, using short forms: casual speech, ~to omoimasu, ~to itte imashita, etc. Students are expected to write and read approximately 60 Kanji. l
Intermediate 3 Genki 1 and Genki 2 Potential verbs and volitional forms will be introduced. Usage of short forms and te form is added.( te ageru, te morau, ~kamo shirenai, ~n desu, etc.) Complex sentences will be practiced. using “toki, tara”, etc.) Approximately 30 more new kanji will be introduced.
Advanced 1 Genki 2 Chuukyuu no nihongo The class will be conducted mostly in Japanese, but English will be used to explain grammar and some difficult topics. The class will focus on learning advanced verb forms (passive, causative, causative-passive, transitive and intransitive). “Keigo” or honorific expressions will be introduced. Students will read materials on various topics pertaining to Japanese culture and the way of living to improve their reading skill as well as acquiring new vocabulary words and expressions. Writing a letter and a short composition will be assigned during each quarter. Kanji will be practiced according to each student's ability. Four language skills will be emphasized.
