JCCCW News, Notices and Special Events
Smiles and laughter abound at our first-ever Kodomo no Hi!
More than 1,000 children, families and participants enjoyed two fun-filled, family oriented days at Kodomo no Hi (Children’s Day) on May 1 & 2 that showcased the programs and activities of the JCCCW. Many – if not most – of our guests were first time visitors to the JCCCW and shared many, many positive comments, and we welcome everyone to return and participate in future events and programs.
With less than a month from idea to full-out event, we offer our deepest thanks to the more than 100 community volunteers, interns and partners who helped make the first-ever Kodomo no Hi a huge success!
See some great new Kodomo no Hi photos on our JCCCW website:http://www.jcccw.org/Past-Events.html

Are there other activities that you would have liked to see offered? Do you have any suggestions for improvement? Should we hold another Kodomo no Hi event? Please share your comments, ideas and suggestions at: admin@jcccw.org

Yoisho! JCCCW Volunteering
“Yoisho” is a Japanese word used to express physical effort. Likewise, the JCCCW’s Yoisho! Program is the part of the organization that allows us to provide programs and events for the community and achieve our goal of promoting and sharing Japanese and Japanese American history and heritage. This vital piece of the JCCCW’s operation, of course, is our volunteers. Our volunteers come from various cultural, social, and education backgrounds, which makes it such a great learning experience.
The goal of the Yoisho! Program is to engage people throughout our community in volunteerism and foster leadership. Yoisho! also strives to maximize the learning experience of volunteers involving them in our organization more so than most volunteer opportunities allow. Since volunteers are the backbone of the JCCCW, another goal of Yoisho! is to acknowledge the hard work of volunteers and offer appreciation for their devotion. To be a part of this program, visit our website to register online JCCCW. You can also call our office: 206-568-7114, or email us: Admin@jcccw.org and let us know what your interests are. We would love to have you share your skills with us!

June 24-27: 2010 Minidoka Pilgrimage
Over sixty-eight years ago, during World War II, almost thirteen thousand people of Japanese ancestry, many of whom were American citizens, were forcibly removed from their homes in Washington, Oregon and Alaska, and sent to a desolate prison camp near Twin Falls, Idaho.
To commemorate this event, former incarcerees, their families, friends, and those interested in this historic event will make a pilgrimage from Seattle and Portland to the former Minidoka Internment Camp from June 24-27, 2010. The Seattle Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League, the Nisei Veterans Committee, and the Friends of Minidoka invite all those who are interested to join us on our pilgrimage.
In Twin Falls, participants will have two chances to visit the grounds of the Minidoka National Historical Site. On Saturday, there will be guided tours of what remains of the former site. On Sunday, a memorial service will be held at the site to honor internees and those who left Minidoka and were killed while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II.
In order to avoid a $20 late registration fee, registration is due by June 4th, 2010.
To register and for hotel and registration information please see the Minidoka Pilgrimage website:

Seattle Asian Art Museum: Japanese Woodblock Prints Fleeting Beauty: Japanese Woodblock Prints
April 1–July 4, 2010 SAAM Tateuchi Galleries
This exhibition brings together prints from the most renowned ukiyo-e artists of the 18th and 19th centuries—including Harunobu, Utamaro, Eishi and Hiroshige—along with Hokusai’s most beloved prints, Great Wave off Kanagawa and Red Fuji. These Japanese woodblock prints demonstrate an evocative play between delicate ink lines and rich blocks of color in portraits of beautiful women and kabuki actors, jewel-like landscapes of famous places, and more. Drawn from the Mary and Allan Kollar Collection, a gift to the Seattle Art Museum on the occasion of its 75th Anniversary, this installation introduces the region to a remarkable collection of prints, all taken from early impressions and in excellent condition.

June 6th: Mukilteo Japanese Memorial Remembrance
Mukilteo Washington is very special place in terms of our history
regarding the good relations among people with diverse ethnic background. In
the early 20th century, Japanese Americans were welcomed and became part of
our small town high quality living experience.

Historical Society members are hosting a Mukiteo Japanese Memorial Anniversary at Centennial
Park, 1126 5th St., Mukilteo, Washington on June 6th, 2010 at 2:00 p.m to
honor Japanese Americans born and raised in Mukilteo and their
contemporaries such as Beverly Ellis who recently celebrated her 90th
birthday.
This event will be the 10th anniversary of the
commemoration of the sculpture in Centennial Park celebrating the heritage
of racial harmony between early Mukilteo residents and the families of
Japanese workers at Crown Lumber Company.
Mukilteo historical re-enactor, Christopher Summitt as J D Fowler,
Mukilteo co-founder will serve as master of ceremonies and provide a brief
historical presentation of our founding in 1860 and our many exceptional
examples of high quality small town life.
Several guest speakers include Mas Odoi whose his father was worked
at the Crown Lumber Company until it closed around 1930. Mas has been
active in the Mukilteo community and been honored as Pioneer of the Year in
2008 and as Parade Marshall for the 2009 Mukilteo Lighthouse Festival. He
served with honor in the US Army during World War ll.
